electronics

I'm working with the arduino platform and I need to learn some electronics to interface with other stuff like sensors, I can program the hell outa this thing no problem since it takes C code and that's my main programming language, but I know only the basics about electronics like ohms law, resistors, capacitors, in parallel/series etc.., but when it comes down to putting shit together I need some fancy book learnings.

Anyone know any good elementary books I can get that gets down to business wihtout to much fluff? I've gotten a few for my Kindle, but so far they've been a letdown, 10 pages waxing philosophic about some component, the history about the component, who made it first bla bla bla, to get the page count up and get more cash for the now 1000 page book, when I'm done with the topic I've forgot what hell it was about. 100 pages and 5 chapters about how to make a damn LED blink argh.

I'm looking for something in the format:

Here's what this component does, now do this test. Here's what another component does, and how you can use it with previous component, now put them together to solve this test etc...
