Eyefinity questions

Anyone here tried eyefinity or know a little about it?

Since I'm getting a HD5970 I'd like at some point to run a 3 monitor eyefinity setup.

I have a 24" Samsung at the moment, I looked at 30" solutions but the price is stupid, I could use a HDTV but the resolution sucks for text, I run my media PC in the living room at 1900x1200 or something and the text still looks like ass at that res, not something I'd like to look at all day.

I was wondering how flexible eyefinity is? Could I run my 24" inch as the center screen, and 2 rotated 17" as the left and right screens? That would be ideal, 3 24" would just be way to large and expensive and I'd be moving my head to much for comfort.

Running out of space on your main drive? Junction points baby!

Why the fuck have I never heard about junction points?

If you don't know wtf either, a junction point is a directory you mount as a drive.

To try do this:

Create a directory on your main drive, call it something like "morespace"

Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory above the "morespace" folder.

Now type:

mountvol

This gives you a list of drive volumes you can mount.

Copy the name of the one you want without the last part that is the drive name

With the drive name (This wont work)
mountvol morespace \\?\Volume{2ce4089a-7981-11dc-b5f9-001a4d4ed6bb}\I:\

Without the drive name, this will work...
mountvol morespace \\?\Volume{2ce4089a-7981-11dc-b5f9-001a4d4ed6bb}\

Voila, now you have a folder that is actually your mounted drive, you have just expanded the space on your main drive with however large the drive you mounted is.

It will work exactly like you'd expect, install a game into morespace\mygame and the installer for the game won't know any difference.

Just DONT delete the folder you mounted, you have to unmount it if you want to remove it.

Here's how you unmount it:

mountvol morespace /D

NOW you can remove the morespace folder

Anyone here have SSD drives?

So I'm going to be giving up my trusty XP finally and going to Win7 to be able to get DX11 going to fully support my HD5970 GFX Card.

Win7 has full support for SSD drives so I'm thinking about getting an 80GB Intel or OCZ SSD generation 2 with TRIM support for the OS.

Anyone run with one of these yet? Boot times of around 6 seconds sounds awefully tempting

Boxer text editor, holy shit

So I checked in to see how my favourite old DOS text editor was doing with the windows version.

It has a billion options which I won't go into, the feature that blew me away was thier new version of Intellisense. If you don't know what that is, it's a feature of a lot of code editors where you type the first x letters of a word and it pops up a list of matches so you can be sure to spell them right, lots of function names in programming can be hard to remember.

They took this to another level. It can now also popup matches from the dictionary or thesaurus. When you type more than 3 letters of a word (Can be configured) a numbered list pops up, you can then just hit the number for the word in the list and it writes it out for you.

Not only does this make sure you spell correctly, but when you get used to quickly hitting the number for words, it speeds up your writing like crazy.

Try the demo, it sounds so simple but it's fucking amazing.

Oh yeah, it can be installed in USB mode, meaning that it will install on an USB stick and store it's config settings on the USB stick so you can always have your editor with you and setup just the way you like it.

ATI Radeon HD 5970 or nVidia GeForce GTX 295?

I can't decide if it's worth the money to get the ATI Radeon HD 5970 when I'm not going to be running insane resolutions or multi monitor gaming setups.

I'm going to be running 1920x1200 so is any game comming out in a reasonable time even going to be able to max the GTX 295? In which case getting the 5970 is going to be total overkill seeing as it can run crysis in 2600x res on a dual monitor setup in 16xFSAA with with everything maxed to hell.

Anyone?

More Opera awesomeness

I've been doing this for a while so figured I'd share this..

Normal when you click on something to download it you then have to navigate to where you usually keep whatever file type it is your are downloading, like videos, mp3's, pdf files etc..

In Opera, you can have any filetype be automatically downloaded to a preset folder. After you set it up you just click on links and they are put right into whatever folder you want without having to do anything.

How to set this up:

Go to opera preferences.
Click on advanced.
Click on downloads.

Now you get a list of mime types, don't worry you don't need to know what a mime type is, just look at the extensions and select one, for example mp3, then click edit.

Put a checkmark in "save to disk" and "do not ask for folder, save directly to", then click on browse and select the folder you want.

Voila, that's it.

Now click on an mp3 download link and nothing happens, except it's downloaded and saved in your chosen folder just like that.

One thing I use this for is nzb files for downloading news. I have a program that looks for nzb files in a folder on my fileserver and then loads that to start a usenet download. I setup nzb files to be downloaded to that folder and now all I need to do is click an nzb file and my fileserver starts downloading a move, fucking awesome.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 - Anyone want to play?

So after my disappointment with MW2 I am hoping that BC2 is going to fill that void. I have been waiting quite a while for a game that will involve organized tactics again and have the actual possibility of playing with people you know online. If you have ever played Battlefield 2 you will know that these tactics were present. I played with a group of people who had a map overlay program and we had strategy. If this game follows suit it could be a very fun game, much more than mw2. But I still have my real hope set out for BF3 which is PC ONLY and comes out sometime in the next 2 years .. but still.. worth looking into. I'm in the private beta through combattesting.com and its getting me physiqued to play in squads.

WTF! I thought the system was fucked up! I thought people were fed up with it and wanted change! I hope all the Obama supporters come out and vote this shit down, but I doubt that will happen. People will probably vote it in within all the states it comes up and vote all the little motherfucking Republicans into office to screw up the Democratic majority in both the Senate and the House and then Obama won't get shit done after Nov. 2010 and then they'll vote another fucking Republican in office (maybe fucking Palin, wouldn't that be exciting) and screw up everything Obama has been trying to do to make this country stronger nationally, internationally and to get a little face back on the world stage that we lost over the previous 8 years. As long as I register a free library card, I can now browse from all libraries in DK and download ebooks of most titles right to an ebook reader, including audiobooks.

No more waiting for a book that's on loan to someone else, no more late fees.

Kens caramelized ginger snacks

Here's an awesome sweet I make whenever I run out of it. caramelized ginger snacks!

Ingredients:
2 large ginger rhizomes.
Sugar.
Water.

Peel ginger rhizomes with a teaspoon, doesn't have to be perfect, just take most of it off as it can be bitter if the rhizomes are old.

Cut into thin slices.

Put in pot and add roughly equal amount of water and bring to a boil. Boil until water is reduced to at least half.

Add as much table sugar (or cane sugar if you wanna be fancy) as the original amount of sliced ginger and boil until the sugar starts to crystallize. Carefull to not burn, but it's ok and even good if it browns a bit.

Quickly spread out on a cake rack or cool plate.

When cool it goes completely dry, hack in smaller pieces if it clumped up a bit. Store in a plastic food container.

Fucking delish I tells ya! It's HOT, but not chilly hot, very warming.

This stuff has a million uses. In cakes, as a snack, over cereals (Godlike in homemade trailmix, excellent with coffee or tea etc..

COD Modern Warfare 2 - holy shit

Just got COD MW2 a couple of days ago and damn is this a good game.

COD World at war was ok but got pretty meh after a while, just more of the same after a couple levels.

MW2's single player is amazing. Constantly something new that keeps it fresh.

I also like how it doesn't give a shit about being politically correct. Shoot up a couple hundred unarmed innocent civilian men woman and children? no problem, although it does nag you asking if you are real real sure you want to include that at install time. Heroes die etc.. love it.

Anyone here make their own wine?

I've been making my own wine for quite some time. Everyone should try it as it's so incredibly easy.

I mostly make fruit wine because good grape juice is hard to come by here in DK and it's to expensive, so I just look out for fruit juices on sale and buy a shitload when it's cheap. Just gotta buy the ones that say no preservatives and you'r good to go.

Did I mention that this is cheap? you can make fantastic fruit wines for less than a dollar a bottle!

All you need to get started is a 5 gallon container, plastic food grade is fine, no need for fancy glass carboys ask some store if you can have a couple of thier used containers, a hydrometer and a packet of yeast.

You can make do without the hydrometer but it's only like 10-15$ and it makes everything so much easier.

Total price under 30$ and that's a one time investment, after that it's just the fruit juice, sugar and yeast.

Here's my recipe that can be used for any type of fruit wine.

Buy 20 liters/5 gallons worth of whatever fruit juice you'd like.

Buy a packet of yeast of the type "Champagne", these are the hardiest and will kill off any other bacteria if present. Champagne yeast will also ferment to 18% alcohol if that's what you want (I do hehe)

Dump a liter of fruit juice in a bowl and stick your hydrometer in there. There's a scale on it that says "Potential Alcohol". Add enough sugar to the juice and dissolve it until it's at the alcohol % you'd like, make sure to weigh the sugar. I useually go for around 13% at this point, don't go to the full 18% because that will probably shock the yeast and could kill it. Now you know how much sugar to add for one liter, so just multiply that up for however many liters you make. I dissolve the total sugar in another liter of juice in a pot on the stove.

That first liter you used to measure how much sugar you need can be used to make a "starter" Dump the packet of yeast in it and DONT stir. Leave it someplace warm over night. If it starts to fizz up and make sort of a cake on top of the juice you got liftoff.

Dump the rest of the juice in your container, dump the sugar you mixed and swish it around, and finally dump the starter in there. Put on the airlock and you'r done. Total time an hour or so.

After about 7 days grab a sample and measure the potential alcohol %, it will have gone down now as all it's measuring realy is the sugar content. When it's at about 2% you can add some more sugar if you'r going for a high alcohol % or if you'r satisfied with 12-13% just syphon everything into another container making sure not to suck up the sludge at the botton (Dead yeast cells) and start drinking. The longer you leave it the more clear it becomes but the cloudiness is just some yeast cells so have at it D

Voila, knock you on your ass fruit wine

This is also great stuff if you'r throwing a party, cheap as chips. Just make sure to warn your guests that this is a lot more potent than it tastes. People that isn't used to it tend to chug it down like lemonade with hillarious consequences hehe.

EDIT: Forgot about the airlock. It's just a curved tube that costs about a dollar, you want that on the container you brew in as it will let CO2 out and no air back in.

Ever since a kitten my siamese can't tolerate anything with duck, makes him puke.

This means I look at the cans of wetfood they get and make sure to stay away from the ones with chicken and duck.

He's been puking and not eating his food lately so I check out the cans.. and sure enough it's duck and chicken even though the label is blue and chicken and duck is yellow.

Yep, the scumbags have changed the colors. The colorscheme is clearly so you can grab the type you want, each can has a different color depending on what's in it.

I guarantee this is some shitbag marketing fuck that noticed the sales were down on duck and chicken and then flipped the colors, voila sales are up!

I wish these piece of shit companies would die in a fire in front of thier kids.

Same with this trend of putting out a new product. At first the quality is first rate and people notice and start buying. Then slowly the quality deteriorates, the markening shitbags are closely watching the sales, as soon as the sales start dropping they know they gone to far and up the quality back to last testresult. Slowly making the product cheap and shitty until the lab rats (us) notice.

Hospitals suck! I was in one from Friday late afternoon (9-4-09) until Monday afternoon (9-7-09; worst Labor Day weekend ever). I had a serious infection (in lower abdomen) and possibly Crohn's disease; they'll know for sure in a couple weeks with more tests but there will be no surgery and there were no leaks. I'm back home and continuing my recovery and should be 100% or close to it on Thursday or Friday. Looks like I also have diverticulosis, but nothing inflammed, bleeding or nothing stuck in them. I guess I'll have to watch what I eat the rest of my life and the party's over.

Google Sketchup - awesome free 3D program thats dead easy to learn

Wow, why didn't I find this program before now?

Basically it's a 3D sketching program that is DEAD easy to learn. Don't be intimidated if you never messed with 3D space before; Youøl be making all kinds of cool stuff in no time... and it's free.

Other 3D apps took me months to get proficennt in, this one I picked up in a day of messing around.

They even broke with the fucked up convention of other 3D programs that every movement is in reverse, so you want to move right? Move right. Not like in other 3D apps where you move left to move right, and move down to move up.. WTF is that about, it gives me motion sickness. (Looking at you UT editor, 30 mins editing... oh now I feel sick)

Oh yeah, it integrates with Google Earth. So you can move somewhere in google earth and click on get current view and it will be placed into Sketchup. Now build something and place it back into the real location in google earth and you can watch your creation sitting there in the real location and walk around in it.

XP Open All Users folder problem???

For some odd reason, everytime I right-click on Start, then Open All Users, then double-click on Programs in the Start Menu to modify my start menu instead of just expanding the folder it brings up a separate search window even after uninstalling Windows Search 4.0. Anyone know how I can get it back to just expanding? It's OK within My Computer and Windows Explorer for some strange reason. Thank you.

MS Bing search misleading users

MS are getting really desperate.

First it was Live search sending fake search referrals in the form of one word faked visitors, then they switched to using Bing as domain name and the fake referrals started coming from Bing.

Now they have started to outright lie in the search engine results.

For example is you search for "How to make pasta" (Just an example) they will grab some results relevant to pasta, for example types of pasta. Then instead of showing the real title of a page that is really "The different types of pasta" they change the title of the page in the results and lists it as "How to make pasta" but then when you click on it, it's really a page with the title "The different types of pasta" that is not what the user searched for at all.

This makes it look to webmasters (and other checking out Bing) as Bing is sending lots of traffic, which they are. But the results the visitor gets is totally irrelevant to what they searched for so of course this traffic is useless and a visitor would leave right away when they didn't get the results they expected.

Go go Microsoft scam tactics...

I can't live without a tablet anymore so now I have to get a new one. The Intous3 line is going out of production so I have to get the Intuos4 A4 instead that's twice the price. Another great thing is that the new pens is twice the pressure sensitivity at 2048 so the old pens won't work with the 4 version.

A bunch of people disappear at random taken from different time periods. Then one day out of the blue a comet changes it's trajectory and heads towards earth. Much panic ensues but it turns out to be some alien lifeform. It dumps 4400 people on a beach and disappears.

The people are detained for a while but they are eventually let go and find out what happened to the world and their families. Slowly these people all turn out to have been given different powers.

The storytelling, music and cinematography is awesome, go watch the pilot and you'l see what I mean.

Seriously, HACCP is a FUCKING GOOD THING. It's law here in DK for the food industry. It forces anyone dealing with food to document that they are acting responsibly and nobody has gone out of business because of it, well some has, the ones that were shitty and didn't want to comply. I, as a consumer is safer and better off.

We also have something in DK called the SMILY (Yes, really) for restaurants and other businesses that sells anything edible. It's quite simple. Every business is inspected at random intervals, they have to document that they follow HACCP and some other health stuff, their equipment used to measure things like temps., fridges, thermometers, scales, etc.. are also tested. If they pass they get a happy smily sticker, if they don't they get a frowny smily sticker. If they get a frowny they get a month to comply and are inspected again. 3 frownies and their license is revoked permanently. Inspectors are relocated all over the country so no inspector is likely to take bribes.

The smily is a huge sticker that MUST be stuck on the wall in plain view of customers, even if it's a green frowny smily telling everyone HEY, THIS HERE IS A SHITHOLE. Sucks to get a frowny so there's very little chance of that happening. I can go out and eat anywhere and be assured that the place is good and clean.

On February 4, 2009 Representative Rose DeLauro (D-CT) introduced the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 HR 875 represents a tremendous expansion of federal power, particularly the power to regulate intrastate commerce. While the proposed legislation tries to address the many problems of the industrial food system, the impact on small farms if the bill becomes law would be substantial and not for the better. HR 875 is a major threat to sustainable farming and the local food movement. The bill would transfer the functions and resources of several divisions within the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), such as the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) and the Center for Veterinary Medicine into FSA. The National Marine Fisheries Service in the Department of Commerce would be transferred over to FSA as well.

If such a regulation does in fact call for a HACCP plan (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point, ’Hass-sepp’), farmers will be required to do the following in developing a plan for their farming operation:
1. Conduct a hazard analysis (e.g., list the pathogens that could be present in the farming operation);
2. Determine the critical control points (e.g., identify points in the operation where pathogens would most likely be present or could be introduced);
3. Establish critical limits;
4. Establish monitoring procedures;
5. Establish corrective actions;
6. Establish verification procedures; and
7. Establish record-keeping and documentation procedures.

FSA’s rulemaking authority includes extensive power to regulate farming practices as well. HR 875 requires the agency to issue regulations that establish ”minimum standards related to fertilizer use, nutrients, hygiene, packaging, temperature controls, animal encroachment, and water” with respect to “growing, harvesting, sorting, and storage operations” [Section 206(c)(3)]; and, “with respect to animals raised for food”, the regulations are to establish “minimum standards related to the animal’s health, feed, and environment which bear on the safety of food for human consumption” [Section 206(c)(4)].

UT3 online.....what a concept!

Just played my first "real" online UT3 match with all the bells and whistles last night and it was fun! I was at FragBU and got my ass kicked, but got my licks in with well places flak grenades, shock combos, and a few "lucky" headshots. I might play tonight there. Seems the server is out of Chicago and my ping isn't too bad. I played DM and TDM, but got off the server after that. Believe it or not, my hand started to cramp up a bit (fucking old age crap). Hehe, I noticed in TDM that me getting fragged a lot was hurting my team, so I hid for a while until my team was ahead again; hey, it's a team game, right? We still lost, but it was because it was 3 vs 4 for a while and I was part of the 3 team.

Um, so I got UT3 configured and I just noticed that the only game types the xloc now appears in by default without the ability to set it in the menu or possibly even the INI files is CTF and the classic DOM part of UT3DOM mutator (and as hoverboard in VCTF and WAR). What the fuck is up with that shit?! @#!@$#!@#%!@$#%$$##!@!!!@##*****

What.....the fucking server code is screwed up with the xloc and too many people are getting booted from servers because they have the xloc enabled when they were playing UT2004? WHO FUCKING CARES!? FUCK THEM AND FUCK EPIC!!!

It's not like I'll be using it that much in DM/TDM, but if I see something and want it now and it's out of reach it would be nice to grab it before a bot does. They nerfed it for CTF, so why don't they take the damn thing out completely. People need to stop whining about the cool things in this game so much in the forums, so that Epic will quit listening to them. Can you imagine how cool UT3 would be if it had all the functionality of the original UT and anything that was added (without changing something else) from UT2003 and UT2004?

There's so many little things that irritate me on a daily basis on xp, vista sucks but I'm hearing many positive things about windows 7 from the same bunch that hated on everything vista so that's a good sign.

Every day for some reason the xp taskbar refuses to hide like I have it set to, so it will just sit there obscuring part of other window on top of them. Only thing that works is pulling up task manager and killing the explorer process, then click new task and start explorer shell again, only now half the icons in he taskbar clock area disappears so I can't click on them, joy.

Copying files and finding out there's not enough room halfway? Yep, now you don't know what files were copied because it doesn't deselect each file after a successfull copy.

Ramdom annoying programs that figures they will just grab focus from whatever I'm doing even though I have powertools set to stop programs grabbing focus. I'm typing and all of a sudden im typing into whatever window grabbed the focus.

Here's to hoping windows 7 isn't a gigantic pile of shit.

OpenAL?

Any thoughts on Hardware OpenAL in this game and crashing? It seems my old install works fine with OpenAL on, but my new one does not. I thought it was the Nvidia video drivers, but it's when I turn on Hardware OpenAL. I have XP SP2 and Audigy2 card with newer components.

EDIT: I fixed it by using the 409KB file wrap_oal.dll for its own file and also made a copy and called it OpenAL32.dll and the game works now. But the question still remains and it looks like I won't be trying the new Audigy2 sound drivers because my 2004 ones still work for all games.

Quake 4 bugs?

I thought I'd see if anyone here has any clue on this; it keeps getting bumped down the queue with no responses on other forums. Also, UT3 will be my next game reinstall.

I have the latest patch (1.4.2) and have created an AutoExec.cfg as well as the original CFG file and still have these problems:

1. In Settings/Game Options/Gun Position >> it keeps defaulting back to Right and I want it Centered no matter how many times I change it. Is this command in the cfg file?

2. In System/Screen Size (on Ultra Quality Settings, aspect ratio 16:10) it keeps defaulting to 1440x900 and I want 1920x1200 as this is the native resolution of my LCD monitor.
EDIT: It's possible that it only shows this in the menu, but it is actually running at 1920x1200 (someone said this on the web somewhere and said he verified it; stupid fucking game bugs).

3. r_mode is set to "-1", but this sometimes is set back to "25" for some odd reason. Is it OK to make the Quake4Config.cfg file "read-only" because I'm not even sure it's reading the AutoExec.cfg like it should. I don't even know what a setting of 25 is supposed to do.

WTF gives with this? I tried making the config files "read-only" and that didn't as the game just changes it within the menu anyway.
EDIT: most likely another menu game bug.

4. Is it true that you can't make Quake4 config file read-only to be read-only and that they actually write to them anyway?
EDIT: Well, I just made my Quake4Config.cfg read-only and as many times as I go in and change the settings it does not change. AutoExec.cfg is not set to read-only and it doesn't change either like it should. Maybe the 1.4.2 patch eliminated the need for the AutoExec.cfg file.

Also, I've already checked with google searches and Quake forums, etc. with no luck. Maybe if I was asking 2-3 years ago, I'd get more of a response. Any ideas?

MENU
1. I have 5.1 surround sound, so do I pick Surround or Five-One in the menu for sound options?
2. I have an Audigy2 sound card, should I pick DirectSound3D HW Support, CL EAX3, CL EAX2, CL EAX or Dolby Surround as my 3D Sound Provider?
3. Since i'm going to eventually enable AF, should I set the Texture Filtering to Anisotropic instead of Trilinear?

CONFIG (Config.ini)
4. Why when Character shadow is set to On in the menu does the Config.ini file show Cfg.CharacterShadow = "Off"?
5. same with Decals and Cfg.Decals = false?
6. The default mouse sensitivity shows 40 and Cfg.MouseSensitivity = 40 in the Config.ini, so what should it be? (Logitech MX518)
7. Why is this set to false, shouldn't it be true (Cfg.Projectors = false)?
8. Right now Cfg.FOV = 95 and Cfg.ZoomFOV = 50 (default settings for 4:3 aspect), but the widescreen gaming forum says these should be set to 105.275347504 and 58.4614994638 for no distortion with 16:10 aspect. I noticed in UT/UT2003/UT2004 that leaving FOV to 90 actually looks better and you don't feel like a short guy running around. Is it different for this game?

Just got a copy of audiosurf, addicting little music based game.

It's sort of like racing game meets advanced tetris.

You pick your favorite music tracks, and the game decodes it into a roadmap. You are then placed on a psychedelic road that changes to the beat and intensity of the music, beats makes bumps in the road. Along the road are colored blocks that you can stack in a grid 8x8 grid, when more than 3 same colored blocks touches in any grid configuration you score points based on the colors. The larger clumps of colored blocks you make touch the higher the score you get. The warmer the colors of the blocks the higher the score for blocks of these, the warmer colored blocks comes in higher intensity in the upbeat parts of the tracks you play.

There's other game modes, like you can pick up blocks and save for later, or you can move the whole grid to bump into blocks on the road instead of moving your car and lots of others I haven't gotten into yet. There's also bonus blocks, card blocks that will shuffle the colors in case you filled up the grid in a way that you are stuck. If you fill up one row with colors that you can't build 3's of you die and respawn. There's also gray blocks that takes points away if you hit them.

Quite relaxing and addicting, or intense based on how you choose to play.

Unreal Anthology problems? UT2004?

Got some problems, maybe you (or anyone else) can help! Here's my thread from BuF:

"Ok, this is completely ridiculous and ludicrous! I installed Unreal and RTNP as well as UT-GOTY edition from Unreal Anthology and configured all these games, downloaded extra stuff I didn't already have and basically got each one up to the same as my previous installs or better, then I installed Quake3 (did same thing with updates), then installed UT2003 (did same thing with updates and extra stuff).

Now, tonight, I'm ready to install UT2004 from the Unreal Anthology disc and all it wants to do is uninstall everything. I can't get it to the screen where I choose to install UT2004 only right now. Why can't I install parts of this Anthology at anytime I want to and only everything at once or nothing at all? All I'm trying to do is install these games in the order of original release dates. Either I'm missing something obvious or it can't be done. Is it seeing my install of UT2003 and thinks it is UT2004 and trying to uninstall it? Is it seeing just Unreal Anthology in general and wanting to uninstall everything before reinstalling anything? I think someone really screwed the moose and missed the f-ing boat on this one.

Found this wonderful news as a con in a review of the game package at newegg:
"Be prepared to either install all 4 games included on the DVD at your first installation, or expect to uninstall ALL Unreal Anthology games if you decide to add another title from the DVD later on. If you insert the DVD later (and choose “install”) to add a title you missed the first time, it will say: "Do you want to completely remove the selected application and all of its features? =Yes= =No=". My suggestion: Install all 4 titles, but ONLY if you DON'T have any of those titles already installed. If you install duplicate titles (C:\UT2004 and C:\Unreal Anthology\UT2004) and try to remove one later, it deletes all keys from the Registry (Win XP) and neither title will boot."

There has got to be a way around this BS!

Also, they say the manual is on the disc in PDF format, but I can't seem to access it anymore.

I noticed there is a setup.ini file in the disk1 subdirectory. Is there any way to copy everything off the disc and move it to a blank partition on my HD, change something in that INI file and install from there? Or maybe a registry setting to change to trick the install in thinking nothing is installed, install UT2004 and then change them back?

If this is really not possible, then a warning should be posted in the Liandri Archives page for Unreal Anthology!

EDIT: just found this posted by GreatEmerald at the Epic games forums that might help:

INSTALLSHIELD Error: if after clicking to install software by using the Install Shield Wizard, this error occurs, then go to c:\ program files \ common files \ and delete the following folder: InstallShield
After deleting the folder InstallShield, every program can be installed now.
However, after deleting the folder and installing the software, recopy it into the common files folder (i.e. the folder InstallShield is not deleted but just moved to another location and now moved back), everything is still be fine, software after that still can install as usual (I don’t know why). I RECOMMEND recopying the folder to its original location after installing the software; this can make some other software (some software already installed in your computer before) which requires Install Shield to install be able to run properly.
Move the folder to another location, install the software, then move back . Great !'

Another possibility is to change the count=1 to count=0 in the setup.ini within the correct section of C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\ subdirectory. That is, of course, if this count is the number of times Unreal Anthology has been installed.

Any comments on these things?"

SM back Live: Just to let you know, I do have the old DVD of UT2004 if I have to use it. But I would like to get this Unreal Anthology version installed and try to use it first before I give up.

They havent won shit though, all this will do is bring us a new even more secure and encrypted filesharing protocol. On top of this, this news is getting a shitton of attention and like idiots, ria/mpaa etc.. will scream about it at the top of thier lungs, so people that didn't know jack about bit torrent will be notofied about it and what it can do... great plan there.

I never used torrents anyway, fuck having to maintain ratios, Giganews "diamond" unlimited with SSL encryption and I can download as much as I want without owing anyone shit. Usenet is where it's at baby!

This months bandwidth useage from my newsreader from downloading uhhhh, linux ISO's, yeah i like ISO's can't you tell? hehe.

It has stepless grind settings, that's the main reason so I can adjust flow time to the second.

It's got huge 64mm grinding burrs so it can grind slower with same speed as smaller burr grinders and not heat up the beans as that ruins the delicate flavours of coffee.

My old grinder was getting on my nerves as it is a bit unpresize and is a stepped grinder, each step adds about 5-8 seconds to the flow time, not good enough anymore.

Some people get a new car, I get a new grinder, gotta have those priorities straight

Why is every new applience getting more and more crappy?

Why is every new applience getting more and more crappy in the name of "Saving" and "Environment friendly and "Green" or whatever hippy bullshit term applied?

I had to get a fucking industrial dishwasher because every new dishwasher is underpowered to be "Green" and power saving. See, I don't want to wait 3 hours for a fucking dishwasher to get done. The old one that lasted like 40 years (Was on the house before I got it) and was done in like 20 min. - used boiling water and the motor was a fucking beast with power. The "consumer" dishwashers can't hardly clean a cup with some espresso dried on it.

This week I was redoing the toilets upstairs, but everyone was "Water saving" so even doing 2 full flushes it doens't properly get the water refreshed. On all of the "Home" models there's 2 stupid plastic buttons now, one for half the amount of water and one for full, even the "full" one doesn't flush properle with enough water. Even more shitty is that instead of the old system where you just pull and it flushes the tank, now you have to stand there like an idiot holding the button down, so you can stop flushing short of the full amount I presume, fucking stupid. Because of this I also had to get the redicoulous expensive "Industrial" way and get toilets made for public stalls. My poor wallet

Kens Guide to Using Usenet RAW headers and NBZ indexing sites

There's been a lot of whining since the MPAA went after Newzbin, now they don't create reports for movies and shit anymore so people can't search and get a nice NZB file ready for download, big fucking deal, it's easy to do yourself...

Here's how:

I'm using newzbin as an example here, it's pretty much similar with other usenet indexing sites.

First do a search for what you want to download, in newzbin switch to NFO for where to search. The reason to search for NFO's instead of going straight to "usenet RAW" is that any release group worth anything will put out a NFO with details about the release.

Now lets say we searched for "Name of movie" you will get a list of matches, in there somewhere you will see something like this:

#DCvCD on irc.RIZON.net Presents:Name of movie DVDSCR DCvCD MVCD Read the NFO) - [01/44] - "Name.of.movie.DVDSCR.mVCD-DCvCD.nfo (1/1)" yEnc

This looks like it's going to work, lets copy a bit of the text, like this:

#DCvCD on irc.RIZON.net Presents:Name of movie DVDSCR DCvCD MVCD Read the NFO)

Now switch to "usenet RAW" and hit search.

Now you get a list of matches, this will be all the files needed for this release. Place a checkmark in front of all the matches and then click on "Create NZB"

TADAAAAAA... you created your first NZB file manually. This is the same process that editors on newzbin goes through so now you can get anything you like, and MPAA can't do shit about that.

On top of this, you are now your own "editor" so you don't have to rely on another editor person having created a report for you, you have access to ALL of usenet.

I have finally found the BEST Jasmin rice in the world - Golden Lotus

A couple of years ago I bought a bag of Jasmin rice, it was fucking amazing but I could not find it again, the store couldn't get it anymore

Since then I have tried hundreds of different brands to find that quality again, none came even close.

I finally found them by drilling my asian cuisine pusher and pestering him a couple times a month to see if he could find them and he finally came through.

When you open the bag your kitchen will fill with the most powerfull smell of Jasmin Rice, when you cook them the whole house will be filled for hours with this delicious sweet aroma, nothing like any other jasmine rice and the taste... oh mama!

Seriously, I could eat nothing but these rice all year round, they are that good.

A guy called Sugata Mitra tackles the problem of bad, or non-existent teachers in area with extreme poverty.

The test areas has a population of kids that don't know English, and the kids are mostly 100% illiterate and have never
seen or used a computer.

What he did was install a pretty nice PC in a hole in a wall connected with a touch-pad so it couldn't be stolen or damaged and just left it there without a word about it.

Random kid walks up, messes around with the touch pad and figures out how to browse the Internet in about 5-8 minutes. A couple days later tons of other kids are there teaching each other how to browse. They didn't know a lick of English, most couldn't even read.

3 months later without any supervision they have fucking installed games, are playing them, knows what a processor is because the current one was apparently to slow (lol) and they also wanted a better mouse, they are saving files, loading them again etc.. No teachers, no-one taught them shit, and they now had a roughly 200 word English vocabulary because they needed that to work the Internet and games.

The same amount of skills that they taught themselves would have taken several years of classes, all for the price of a PC and Internet connection.

This is seriously amazing, watch it!

Just got TombRaider Underworld and wow is all I can say.

My system can handle it on high in 1920x1200 (Native res of my 24") and first there was the normal intro stuff with a bit of backstory, those are useually way way better looking than the game itself made by animators and not the game engine.

Then nothing happened, she just stood there, I was like what? did the game lock up? No, there's torches burning and then it hit me, this IS the game.

I've always used to joke with friends in past games with those overproduced cutscene movies between levels that there would come a day when the games would actually LOOK like that, this is the first time I was this impressed, the game looks like a damn movie.

Dumbass audiophiles are always good for a laugh

I just read a huge thread about some comapany making 7000$ cables and all thier claims about the extreme frequencies these cable can carry.

Of course the dumbass "audiophiles" starts yammering on about how they have "golden ears" and how thier 50.000$ home stereos with 7000$ cables can reproduce bla bla bla bla.

Why do I laugh at them?

Go visit ANY recording studio, from normal demo studios to multi billion dollar Abby road level studios and you will see that the cables they use to record are your bog standard MAX 100$ pro audio XLR cables. Any frequencies these morons clain to be able hear with thier golden ears and 7000$ magic cables will already at the time of recording have passed through a bog standard XLR cable, so even if, (and that's an "if" so small that it's virtually non-existant) these cables could carry those claimed frequencies, these same frequencies will never have been recorded in the first place because the audio signal has passed though a normal cable.

While we're at it, even thier 50.000$ stereo would be a limiting factor. Take it apart and I'll guarantee you that the inside of them are using normal wiring, just like anything else, so there's another reason why these cables would never work, unless your stereo was also wired internally using these 7000$ magic cables then they would have no effect.

Sooo stupid, but I love hearing them trying to rationalize thier massive waste of money, most of them DO actually clue up when you tell them stuff like this, but they will of course deny it, because they feel absolutely idiotic about spending so much money. It's the same thing with Mac users, they claim superiority, but they know deep down inside that a pc system costing about 80% less owns thier Mac seven ways to sunday for way less, they will never admit this, because it makes them feel like idiots and they have bought tons of expensive programs they can't run without thier Macs.

He also found out a great trick to do at night. One of the closets in my bedroom has a door that's a little bit off when closed. He will wait until I'm asleep and will then take a running jump at it and flick off it, like a cat walldodge. It makes the loudest fucking bang, I almost pissed myself the first time he did it.

Why are most newer harddrives fucking shit?

Ok, rant time...

One of my external drives has started making that "click", most will know this means it will die soon. This has happened to 3 drives in the last 2 years.

Then we have my old ass fileserver that lives in my closet. This thing is at least 8 years old, so are the 6 drives in it. This machine is on 24/7 and has been for all those years it only gets turned of when there's a power outage or when I do something stupid and blow a fuse in the same group it's on. The drives in it are pretty much constantly working, I fill my newsdownloader with 10 gigs worth of downloads every few days, at night it streams movies and tv series for a couple hours, and the whole day long it useually streams music, so these drives have been taking a constant beating for the last fucking 8 years.

Not a peep out of them, they just keep working? If it was one drive that had no problems it could be a lucky drive, but all 6?

My dad has an ancient machine, it's like 10 years old, every single piece of hardware in it works flawlessly, even the damn mouse which I seen to break every 6 months.

And most new drives will last maybe a couple years if they get any kind of harder use, what's wrong with this picture?

The new set of rules, under section 76 of the 2008 Act and section 58A of the 2000 Act, will target anyone who 'elicits or attempts to elicit information about (members of armed forces) ... which is of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism'.

A person found guilty of this offence could be liable to imprisonment for up to 10 years, and to a fine.

Tallis, a London-based photographer, was covering the anti-BBC protest on Saturday 24 January when he was approached by a police officer. Tallis had just taken a picture of the officer, who then asked to see the picture. The photographer refused, arguing that, as a press photographer, he had a right to take pictures of police officers.

According to Tallis, the officer then tried to take the camera away. Before giving up, the officer said that Tallis 'shouldn't have taken that photo, you were intimidating me'. The incident was caught on camera by photojournalist Marc Vallee.

I'm updating my rig around Feb/Mar 2009 and was wondering about the ILTK-ACU community thoughts. I'll still be using XP Home, Lian-Li full-tower case, plenty of DVD-RAM/ROM drives, fans, fan controller, Audigy2 OEM sound card, floppy drive, 19" CRT monitor, Logitech Elite keyboard and probably new MX518 mouse (or the old MX500 until it dies). My old system will be 5 years old by then (which is just about now isn't it?). Here is the new stuff I'm thinking about getting (I'll insert links later if requested or if I have time as this thread progresses):

CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8600 Wolfdale (unless not available at order time)
MB: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P (the X48-DS5 disappeared)
HS: Arctic Cooling Freezer XTREME (or Noctua NH-C12P)

I'm going to be using the system for games, but mostly to see UT3 better and maybe get some more games down the road. That's about the only thing that will stress my system at this point. I believe that does it for now. Any comments/suggestions? Thank you.

UT3 locking up at beginning and in middle of maps?

Any ideas what could be causing it? My system barely runs UT3 to begin with and it's locking up on custom maps CTF-Eurus and WAR-Tropico. Could it have something to do with free space on the partition down to 2.13GB? I'm not moving or uninstalling anything to free up space, so I may not be able to play it for about a month (new system build will happen next month). Any ideas?

Maplists
The old maplist system has been replaced with an entirely new one, which is configured through UTMapLists.ini, this allows mods using custom .ini files to have map cycles setup from the ingame menus
- To recover the old server maplist settings, you need to open UTGame.ini and go to the [UTGame.UTGame] section, then for each 'GameSpecificMapCycles' entry you need to find (or create) an entry in 'GameProfiles' under [UTGame.UTMapListManager] in UTMapLists.ini, which has a 'GameClass' value that matches the 'GameClassName' value in 'GameSpecificMapCycles'.
Then you need to find the maplist in UTMapLists.ini which is specified by 'MapListName' value in the 'GameProfiles' entry, (e.g: [DMMapList UTMapList]), and then you must manually transfer each map name in 'GameSpecificMapCycles' to the maplist in UTMapLists.ini.
For example, Maps=("DM-Arsenal","DM-Biohazard") in 'GameSpecificMapCycles' would become: [DMMapList UTMapList] Maps=(Map="DM-Arsenal") Maps=(Map="DM-Biohazard")
Configuration options for [UTGame.UTMapListManager]:
- GameProfiles: This is a list which is used to define custom game type settings (mainly for game voting), options include:
GameClass: The FULL class name of the gametype, including package name as well as class name (e.g. "UTGame.UTDeathMatch")
GameName: The name that is displayed on the vote menu when selecting a gametype (e.g. "Deathmatch", "Warfare - No Orbs")
MapListName: The name of the maplist that this game profile will use (e.g. "WARMapList")
Options: Additional URL options which are used when switching to this gametype (e.g. "?WarmupTime=60")
Mutators: Mutators to be loaded for this gametype (e.g. "UTGame.UTMutator_LowGrav,UTGame.UTMutator_Instagib")
ExcludedMuts: Mutators which are disallowed for this gametype (e.g. "UTMutator_Instagib,UTMutator_Slomo")
bIsTeamGame: Specifies whether or not the current gametype is a team game (used internally for game voting)
MapReplayLimit: The number of matches which must pass before any one map can be played again
ActiveGameProfileName: The 'GameProfiles' entry which is currently active; mainly used by the game during runtime
PlayIndex: A value used for keeping track of when maps were last played, represents the total number of games played
AutoStripOptions: A list of URL options which are automatically removed upon map change (e.g. "LinkSetup")
AutoEmptyOptions: The same as 'AutoStripOptions', except these options are given an empty value on the URL (e.g. "GoalScore,TimeLimit")

[*]Configuration options for [UTGame.UTMapList]:
- Maps: The list of maps used by the maplist, options:
Map: The filename of the map (minus the file extension)
ExtraData: An array of arbitrary data which can be associated with each maplist entry; mainly used by the game at runtime
AutoLoadPrefixes: Maps with the prefixes defined here will be automatically added to the maplist (e.g. AutoLoadPrefixes=CTF,VCTF)
LastActiveMapIndex: The index into the 'Maps' list which was last active; mainly used by the game during runtime

Voting:
Added support for midgame voting for maps, game types, and mutators.
All vote related variables have been moved to UTVote.ini
- To recover the old vote configuration values, you need to open UTGame.ini and go to the [UTGame.UTGame] section, then manually transfer the vote configuration values to the [UTGame.VoteCollector] section in UTVote.ini; the affected values are: 'bAllowMapVoting', 'VoteDuration' (now 'MapVoteDuration' and 'GameVoteDuration'), 'bMidGameMapVoting' (now 'bMidGameVoting'), 'MapVotePercentage' (now 'MidGameVotePercentage'), 'MinMapVotes' (now 'MinMidGameVotes'), and 'InitialVoteDelay'.
Added new configuration options 'InitialVoteTransferTime' and 'RushVoteTransferTime'; the first slows down the speed at which vote related data (e.g. maps, game info) is transferred, to spread out bandwidth usage and prevent lag; the second speeds up the remaining transfers, for when the client opens the vote menu
Added gametype voting, allowing players to vote in a different game type before voting for a map (if map voting is enabled). Gametype configuration is setup in UTMapLists.ini, through 'GameProfiles' under [UTGame.UTMapListManager]; configuration options in UTVote.ini:

Added mutator voting, allowing players to decide which mutators get enabled/disabled in the next match; configuration options:

Which was your favorite UT version?

While I will always have fond memories of the first UT, I have to take the unpopular road and say UT2003 (before nerfing) hands down.

Stacking health, stacking shields, lightning fast weapon switch, boostdodges, insane shield jumping, trick jumping out the ass, easy to damage xlocs so you could hit it in the air with the LTG and get telefrags. Oh and telefragging that actually worked if you could aim.

The thing I miss most is the awesome amount of tricking you could do.

Anyone remember the tricks you could do back when the speed of your player didn't cancel when you translocated? Oh the tricks you could pull of with that. Like throwing your xloc on the flag, then immidiately stepping on a jump pad and translocating, you would come out right on the flag and because your velocity didn't cancel you'd go flying up in the air with the flag like a jack in the box. Defending against that was so much fun, never a safe moment hehe. Because the speed didn't cancel it also made it much harder to do xloc climbing, if your timing wasnt good you'd just go splat.

Also miss the dodge speed cancel, like you could do from say facing worlds, jump of and time a dodge against the side of the tower right before you hit the ground, the shit you could do with that was great. I used to practice shild dodge bosting from citadel and landing against the side of one of the bridge pillars, time it right and no damage.

Then came the nerfing, and slowly... ut died.

Age your own beef - no realy, do it!

Being fucking fed up with the horrid excuse for beef here in DK that has all been pumped with water so you can't get a good crust because of all the water that drains off when you fry it, I started to age my own beef as an experiment to see how much better it would be and if it could be done at home.

All I can say is "Oh mama is this good"

If you wanna try it yourself here's how:

Buy a good cut of meat, doesn't have to be that expensive, but try to find something with good marbling, it helps. Not less than would get you 5-6 good sized steaks.

Check your fridge temp, has to be around 35F. Stick in one of these things that measures air humudity, you want something around 60 which you will probably have with a temp around 35F.

Wrap a kitchen towel around the meat, put meat on a cake rack or similar so any juice can drip off.

Check once a day and if the towel gets to damp from meat juice change it to a new one.

Go for around 6-7 days, you will lose a good 30% of weight. The meat will smell "good" for lack of a better term, and there will a slight sour note in the smell, this is fine, and indeed what you want. Any "bad" flavours is a bad sign, your nose will tell you, trust your nose.

When you'r ready to try it, cut of the ends if they got to dry and tough and fry some good sized steaks to no more than medium rare. The meat will have been broken down a lot more than fresh meat so even medium rare will be great even if you like medium.

The "beefyness" will have gone trough the roof, the crust you get from frying will be totally brown instead of just the normal pathetic crust you get from fresh meat.

I'm in the process of getting a spare used fridge just to have meat aging in there all the time, it's that much better.

Strange mouse freak out

Anyone even had thier mouse freak out once in a while and start flying randomly around the screen clicking and dragging and opening like 50 different programs that it happens to click on while going nuts?

It happens once every few days, last time it went berserk I quickly yanked the cord and it still keept flipping out for a while.

It's not a wireless and it's not because of the surface, I use the same surface I always had.

Apart from that the mouse works fine.

Whenever this happens, the mouse driver reverts to standard MS mouse after it stops flipping out, side buttons stops working and it reverts to standard mouse speed. Then if I click on the mouse control panel and bring up the logitech control panel, and just hit apply without changing anything it goes back to working fine again.

Realy fucking strange, scanned with a ton of anti-virus and found nothing. I'm using process guard so it's no surprise that this isn't a virus because PG locks down every process not on my whitelist.

I once had a motherboard keyboard port die on me and when it was starting to break it typed random letters, hope it's not the same thing happening just with my PS/2 port.

Funny thing is that this never happens when I'm booted into Linux.

Sous-vide is a fucking miracle for cooking.

Some of you may remember my Previous post on Sous-vide

I been using this technique for a while now and I can't begin to explain how much this has done for my cooking.

Good meat is off the chain expensive in DK, don't know how expensive it is in other countries. But for example a kilo of Filet Mignon is around 40 US dollars, most other meats is not worth buying unless you make stews out of it, tough as shoeleather, commercially brined to increase the water content so a kilo of meat will turn into half a kilo when cooked. Fucking bullshit. Impossible to get a reliably tender steak, it's a crap shoot and then you spend a lot of time and effort and sit down to eat and it's touch as an old shoe, grrr.

Sous-vide has allowed me to go out and buy just about any cheap cut of meat and it consistantly turns out to melt in my mouth. I recently found a good offer for flank steak and I tried cooking it normally, even at rare it was tough, even when pounded flat it was STILL tough.

Sous-vide cooked it, tender as filet mignon.

I've experimented a lot with Sous-vide to see if I could make it accessible for people that don't want to go total nerd on thier home cooking and yes, it realy is quite easy to get started and you DON'T need to turn your kitchen into a laboratory.

A rice cooker, a voltage regulator, and a decent thermometer and you can do it allmost as well as with expensive lab equipment. You may be a degree of here and there but it's still miles better than normal cooking of meat and fish. You don't realy need the vaccuum sealer, it works fine with ziplock bags, just squeeze the air out and close them up.

If anyone's interested in being able to buy cheap as shit meat and turn it into mouth watering, melt in your mouth goodness let me know and I'll write up some info on how to get started for under 50-80$ bucks, less if you allready have a rice cooker and a decent thermometer. It's NOT hard, try it once and you will be SOLD.

Here's a short easy and cheap version, sort of faux Sous-vide that you can try, just to see how amazingly Sous-vide works, it doesn't work for meats that needs to be cooked long and low to dissolve collagen into gelatin, like meats with lots of tough connective tissue, but for a steak or some other clump of meat that doesn't have tough connective tissie it works superbly well.

Grab your meat and a ziplock bag. cut of a slice of butter, salt and pepper the meat and place the butter slice on top. Now grab your digital meat thermometer and stick the probe into the midde of the meat lengthwise. Put the meat into the bottom of the ziplock bag, squeeze the bag so there's as little air in it as possible, best way is to zip the bag almost all the way, then sqeeze the air out and zip the last part.

Got your bag with the meat in it and the thermo wire sticking out of the bag?

Now heat a pot of water so it's just below boiling, we don't want any bubbles, just gently steam from the water. Put the bag into the pot so it floats, set your thermometer to go off at 60C or 140F.

When the beeper goes off remove the ziplock bag from the water. Heat a skillet to searing hot, in with a drop of oil, quickly sear both sides for 30 seconds.

Slice meat and marvel at the perfect color all the way, try a slice and taste just how good and tender the meat is. The meat is so tender because sous-vide doesn't need high heat to penetrate the meat fast, it just cooks the meat until the desired doneness is slowly reached so the outside becomes dry and the heat is not high enough that the fibers in the meat contracts.

Flavour paring can be used to substitute ingredients or put things together in interesting combinations for dishes that you would not have imagined otherwise.

By looking at the component flavour compounds in foodstuffs and finding more than 2 compounds they have in common we can mix them with each other and have them blend and work amazingly well, even when our instincts tells us that would not work, for example chocolate and cooked chicken? Sounds pretty ewwww right? But it works.

This has been something that for the home cook have been out of reach because you need to send shit in for expensive molecular analysis in order to find out what different ingredients have in common. There's a massively expensive database you can buy (20K+ $) that many high end restaurants buy that I have been lusting for, but fuck that price for home use.

Now theres a website with some heavy financial backing that have put a ton of these analysis online into a database format and you just pick from ingredients, the database looks up other ingredients with the same flavour compounds and displays them in a graphical tree showing you what can be mix or substituted.

Seriously, try some weird combos and be amazed that they actually work great together. It's miles of fun freaking out people by serving odd combinations. You also get a lot more mileage out of whatever you have laying around because you find that you can combine things that you normally wouldn't.

It's also fun to see combinations that you have tasted before and see that the reason they go so well together is because of matching flavour compounds. For example Chicken and sesame seeds.

Ok so most of you know I love to cook. Lately Cilantro has been all the rage and we don't get it at many places over here but I found some and bought it.

I love koriander and Cilantro is the weed where koriander is the seed so I figure it would taste great.

I eat pretty much everything, even bugs and shit when on vacations where they eat that but this shit is VILE, taste like puke, soap and that blue shit you use in the toiletbowl.

I see lots of cooking shows where they heap that shit on everything. I tried a small amount in a salad but even just a little fleck of it overpowers everything and the taste stick in your mouth even after several glasses of wine.

YUCK.

Older games that kicks ass

I been on a "try lots of games" binge lately and found some realy great games that still holds up.

Unreal of course, but I also tried Call of Duty 1 and 2 since I liked COD4 and if you haven't tried them they are great, especially COD2 is awesome and massively huge and you can probably get them for a couple bucks, well worth that.

What I don't like about never games is that they are getting so fucking short, I haven't tried any new games that I didn't finish in a couple days, the look great but are to short. Honestly with COD1 and 2 I didn't even realy notice any bad aging, they both look great even today.

Any other older games that you can recommend?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Children in California who want to buy or rent a violent video game without a parent's permission could have that right taken away by a federal appeals panel, which heard arguments on the case Wednesday.

A state law passed in 2005 that tries to limit access to such games is under consideration by a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The state law, which prohibits the sale or rental of the games to anyone under 18 and requires them to be clearly labeled, was struck down last year by a lower court. Video game manufacturers argued that it violates minors' First Amendment rights. Courts in several other states have struck down similar laws.

But California Deputy Attorney General Zackery Morazzini asked the federal appeals panel to uphold the law, saying violent games are just as obscene as the sexually explicit material limited from children by the U.S. Supreme Court.

He said states have every right to help parents who want to keep their children from playing violent video games.

The Video Software Dealers Association and Entertainment Software Association say imposing restrictions on video games could lead to states seeking limited access to other material under the guise of protecting children.

"Maybe a state will say we shouldn't let you sell, without a parent's permission, books about homosexuality or sex education or birth control," Paul Smith, the industry's attorney, told reporters after the hearing. "I think it's a very scary prospect."

The judges appeared to agree, saying that upholding California's law would mark an expansion of federally regulated materials and could open the door to other restrictions by state legislatures.

"Aren't you asking this court to go where no court has gone before?" Appellate Judge Consuelo Callahan asked Morazzini.

"Is there anything out of limits for the Legislature to prohibit to minors?" Judge Alex Kozinski said. "What about games where people eat unhealthy foods and get fat?"

When asked by Judge Sidney Thomas about any differences between a violent video game and a violent book, Morazzini argued that the games are interactive and required a child to participate in the violence.

In a statement released after the hearing, State Sen. Leland Yee, a child psychologist who wrote the 2005 law, cited studies that show violent games can be linked to aggression, anti-social behavior and desensitization to violence.

Yee said he hoped the panel would "empower parents with the ultimate decision over whether or not their children play in a world of violence and murder."

But the video game industry argued that California failed to prove there is a connection between such games and psychological or other harm to children.

Smith also said video game manufacturers already have a voluntary rating system for their games and should not be required to label them. Kozinski questioned why the industry should not be forced to label video games, saying parents could still choose to buy whatever games they wanted for their children.

"I don't see why this is a big censorship thing," Kozinski said.

The appeals court is expected to make its ruling in the next few months. The case ultimately could be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Good war simulators?

I played the older Close Combat: First to Fight and liked it a whole lot. The whole "Ready Team Fire Assist" tactics and the way you have to lead your team tactically or you'r fucked, almost no health except for some very sparse medkits made the game experience a whole lot better than other single players. It was a bit to easy though but a great game.

Right now I'm playing Ghost Recon: Advanced War Fighter and oh boy, just what I was looking for.

It's hard as HELL and looks awesome. Even on easy you WILL get fucked if you don't play tactically. The levels are huuuge, UT war and onslaught seems tiny and it's all buildings and ruins and shit everywhere you have to think about where enemies can take you out. Damage is realistic so you won't live if you try to run and gun no matter how good your aim is.

Needs a beefy box to run though, I have a Q6600 Quadcore and Nvdia 8800 GTX and it's juuuust barely cutting it on high settings.

Anyone know of similar warsim games, heavy on tactical gameplay, no micromanegement shit, just staight war tactics with a small fire team?

This has got to be the fucking saddest thing I have ever seen. OK maybe I practiced UT sometimes way to much but this is just fucking scary levels of obsessiveness

In what is perhaps the most shining example of obsession and geekiness I have ever seen, a fella by the name of Bradster has 36 World of WarCraft accounts that he plays on 11 computers simultaneously. He mainly seems to be doing it because he doesn’t like to rely on so many other people to get a raid going, which includes attacking the Alliance capital cities, and on that front I can totally see where he’s coming from.

I hate those Alliance douchebags too, but I’m not about to drop $5711 per year like Bradster is. The best way to get to them is to just live well, right? Well, Bradster doesn’t appear to be letting the Alliance off the hook so easily, as he plans on picking up 36 copies of Wrath of the Lich King on day one, spending around $1500, just so he can have a raid group of level 80 Shamans terrorizing Stormwind as soon as possible.

Read on to see how this crazy man manages to control all of these characters.

A lot have asked me, why create so many? The main reason is to invade Stormwind and Ironforge when they reach top level. I’m sure the Alliance will put up a big fight when that happens. We’ll see how it goes. If they don’t make level 70 before Wrath of the Lich King, then it will be at level 80. That is my main goal. That will probably happen after I’ve got some PvP gear from the battlegrounds. I’m also planning to do some 25 and 10 man raid instances but that is secondary to my PvP goal. Of course I’ll be doing arenas too to build up PvP gear but I’m not expecting to do that great there because I’m way behind in gear right now. I need to get to level 70 first, then level 80 and by then I will probably have all green gear while most others have been doing the battlegrounds and arenas.

It costs me exactly $5711 in subscription costs per year with 36 accounts on the 6 month pay schedule. Not bad considering I’m looking at it like it’s a hobby and there are more expensive hobbies out there than World of Warcraft.

32 of my shaman are level 61. One shaman that I had before I started the 32 is at level 70 along with 8 other level 70 classes that I had. My mage, priest and druid are in the center of the circle of shaman in the pictures but they are kind of hard to see. I’ve also got some mages and priests that I’m currently working on that are level 23. Once they are at level 31.9, I will stop working on them, get 16 of them to level 60 with the recruit-a-friend bonus levels and work on the shaman again.

When Wrath of the Lich King is released, I plan to be at the store when it opens and will purchase 36 copies of it. With tax, it should be about $1500 for all of them. Then the shaman are on their way to level 80 along with the priest, druid and mage.

By the way, I have 9 level 80 shaman created on the Murmur PvP realm in the Wrath of the Lich King beta. I mainly tried it out to see how well my computers would work as they are. With the exception of one my desktop computers, I should be fine with the hardware that I have.

I use 3 addons in the game. CT_MapMod is used to give me locations for quests, etc. ClassIcons is another addon that I use to show the class of the target. It helps for PvP encounters. Then the last addon I use is SSPVP2 which is excellent for displaying timers and other things while in the battlegrounds.

For my keys to send to all instances of WoW on my 11 computers, I use Octopus 1.3.2. Maximizer in Octopus allows me to start up all WoW instances at the same time or any individual instance such as if a WoW instance has crashed. It also allows me to shutdown all of the computers at the same time.

Sandboxie - run dubious programs with no fear

Ever had to install something that you didn't trust 100% ? (*cough*)

Enter Sandboxie, it creates a small partition on any drive you specify and installs itself at the lowest OS level. If you install and run anything from this partition it is sandboxed and the program is tricked into thinking it runs like normal, but everything it does is contained to the sandbox partition. That means is there's spyware, virus etc.. in the program you run from the sandbox it can't do shit to the rest of your system.

One of the members of the Core release group gave a recommendation to use Sandboxie, that's good enough for me

The Spore anticipation and discussion thread

I can't be the only one being feeling the Spore hype tug at my gaming strings, so let's discuss.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned, but that would be extremely cool is your creature stats affecting the creature in the game.

Examples:

Evolve and build a creature that has predatory dinosaur eyes, then as long as another creature is standing still you won't see it.

Your creature has little tiny legs, then you can't move fast so you have to work on evolving stealth or becomming more dangerous.

Choose bad eyes and your hearing needs to be better, this should directly affect your screen, like being blurred or less bright, or if you select large nigh vision type eyes for nocturnal creatures then your screen should be uncomfortably bright so you need to seek shady areas and only be out at night.

Choose cat eyes, no color vision but better motion detection and night vision.

etc..

I know that if you behave violently and give your creature stats that points to aggresiveness then your fellow creatures will behave that way to. They will haze eachother, playfight and hit eachother in fun, hunt and use weapons more and so on. If you are a friendly creature then your fellow creatures will sit around and chat and be more intelligent in generel in the way they behave.

If you are a pack creature then if you get into trouble your fellow creatures will help you out, if you are a loner type creature then you'r on your own if you get into a fight.

Very fucking cool.

Don't know what the hell Spore is? Living under a rock are we?

Spore is a total universe creator.

You start out making the primordial soup creature that you will evolve (Sorry fundies, guess you don't get to have fun ehehehe)

After selecting some properties and graphically building your amoeba or whatever you spawn it and let it live. After a while, based on what it learns and what it can do with whatever stats you gave it you can upgrade. You get new building blocks of life, like arms legs eyes TONS of shit.

Then after evolving your creature becomes sentient, also based on its past, it can build somewhere to live, find mates, form a tribe.

It goes on to learn how to build cities, which you again build from various bulding blocks.

Now it gets interesting, if it wasn't before, because the game is an massive online SINGLE player. Your planet is populated by creatures other people made on the fly and these can be friendly, hostile, may try to take over your creatures cities, or they may be friendly and you can develop trade with them.

Now you can create vehicles, totalle free form like creating creatures and buildings so you can move around the planet.

You can import buildings, vehicles and cities from other players around the world, or creatures and see what they came up with and base your game around that.

Oh but it doens't stop there by a long shot.

Now you evolve to be able to fly into space. And guess what, space is filled with planets that you can terraform and start new worlds. You can fly to your own planet and grab a creature from there, either your own or ones other people created and drop them on the planet you formed and see what happens.

Planets can be land based or water worlds, you can make ocean creatures or land and flying creatures.

Other planets in the universe are also loaded from other players worlds so you can fly there and make relations with those planets or take your creature there and see if it can take over.

Oh you thought it stopped there, oh no, there's also galaxies, black holes and I don't know what the fuck else.

Great tip for those annoying dvds that has 'skip block'

You know those dvds that doesn't let you skip when and where you want it?

You could rip it, but that's not necessary.

Just open the dvd with windows explorer, go into the VIDEO_TS folder, sort by size and copy the 3-4 large VOB files somewhere, rename from VOB to mpeg and voila, now you can do whatever you want AND you don't have to wait for the annoying DVD menus, just click and they start. You don't need a special 'DVD player' either, they will play in anything that can play mp2

Lovely Pad Thai I made yesterday

This was fucking yummy I tells ya. Man I love thai and chinese food.

Since I've been pigging out on deep fry dishes with thick tempura coating I thew my colosterol levels a bone and used a nice Tilapia fillet as the main protein.

Poach some julienned dikon radish, sliced ginder, a stalk of lemon grass, some Shiitake mushrooms and chopped scalion onions, stalk of celery, 1-2 large red mild chilis, and caremelised garlic cloves. Then heat your wok to jet engine hot and stir fry for 30 seconds and set aside in seperate bowls. If you want some more umph mash a couple garlic cloves with 2 "rat food" thai chilis in a mortar and brown that in some oil and blend in.

Slice a tilapia fillet into strips, dry of in dry flour so the batter will stick better, then coat in tempura mix, stir fry in lots of oil so hot it's about to combust into flames.

Combine all poached veggies, heat 2-4 tbs of grapeseed/peanut oil until smoking, dump in veggies, tip wok to reach flames and stir at the edges inwards into the wok to get flames, don't piss yourself, you want HUGE flames, keep it up as long as you can, when flames die tip the wok into the gass flame and use your spatula to sorta pull the flame into the wok and it should flame up again, keep doing that into the oil is gone and no more flames spark, this is what your thai/chinese are missing and why they never taste right, this is what's called "wok hei", the breath of the wok and it gives your dish this delicious smoky flavour, this is imperative to get that real restaurent taste. Now we want a little taste of cat food so sprinkle 2 tbs of fish sauce, don't worry about the smell of public urinary it won't show in the dish but add some lovely umani taste. If you absolutely can't stand fish sauce add some soya and a pinch or two of MSG salt. (No it won't kill you, it's produced by your body allready, without monosodium glutamate (MSG) in your body you will keel over and die, your taste receptors have cells specifically designed to taste MSG, MSG is present in vegetables like tomatos, in meat, in tofu, in soya, in mushrooms and lots of other things and you'r still alive, so tell the health hippies spouting of scaremonger shit to go kill themselves.)

Cook some jasmin rice and setup on serving plate, drizzle generours sprinkling of mung been sprouts, add a couple greem lemon slices and serve.

YUM!

For making easy tempura, just buy some premixed tempura flour. To prepare mix in water with a chopstick or end of a spoon, you don't want a smooth mix you want it lumpy and ugly as fuck about the density of pancake batter, those lumps will sweel up when fried and add extra crisp.

Something I was thinking about recently.

Organic foods are supposed to be more nutritious and contain more vitamins studies say.

People living on a normal vestern diet already take in WAY more vitamins than we need, not to mention nutrients in general, most people are to fucking fat anyway and excess vitamins are simply discarded by your body.

So what the fuck is the point of paying 200% more for food which supposedly contains more of what you don't need? Only malnutrioned people in 3rd world contries would benefit from it, but they sure as fuck can't afford it.

And no, "organic" food doesn't taste better, food that are grown properly, and animals that are taken care of properly taste better, it has nothing to do with being organic.

I just tweaked the cache a bit, added css files and javascripts to the caching functions.

It shouldn't have any adverse effects, but please let me know if you notice page loading has gotten faster, or any bugs.

Also, I added an option so you can chose to hide the server status block on the frontpage. It's pulled from an external server status site which sometimes is slow to respond and slows down loading of the frontpage.

To hide it, go to your account, click edit and find the block configuration heading and uncheck the server status block.

Insane stock clarifying technique.

Food freaks only!

I just found this technique, it's fucking amazing.

I like my stocks to be clear, crystal clear, but results have been dismal so far until I found this technique.

After your stock is done, strain it like normal to clear of large food particles.

Now add a few sheets of gelatin to the stock and disolve it, allow to cool to room temperature so the gelatin sets.

Now for the magic. Stuff it in the freezer until it's frozen solid.

Take it out, put in a sieve with a sheet of kitchen paper towel in the bottom of the seive and let it defrost.

Frezing gelatin breaks down the gelatin by a process called syneresis. What happens is the gelatin looses it's power to keep the liquid contained, it seeps out, leaving particles as small as 0.1 microns trapped in the geletin.

Result... Stock as clear as a glass of white wine.

You can use the techique for anything you want to clarify. For example tomato or carrot juice as clear as water but still tasting like it should.

You can use it for flavour extraction to. After you clarify just let the water evaporate and you have 99% pure flavours of whatever you clarified.

Building my own wok gas burner - keep your fingers crossed

So I've searched high and low for a more powerfull gas burner for my wok cooking, but the most powerfull I could find so far is only about 20K BTU and it's not cutting it, need 60K BTU at least to get the elusive "wok-hey", or "spirit of the wok", that smoked taste all properly made wok food has. If you've ever eaten chinese takeout and tried making chinese/thai wok dishes at home and never made it taste as good, chances are almost 99% sure that you didn't have enough heat to get wok-hei, cooking in a wok with a kitchen gas stove or even worse, an electric plate is basically just cooking in a wok shaped pot. If the wok is not hot enough that the fumes from the food frequenly ignites into a huge fireball, it's not hot enough

I'm cooking outside of course, I don't think it's do-able inside unless you like to wash down your whole kitchen everytime you finish cooking, damn it's messy cooking, the whole garden outside is foggy from all the food oil smoke but it's fantastic fun and a bonus is that the huge fireballs scares the piss out of the neighboors little yapping shit dogs so they run inside.

I've made up plans for a home made gas burner that will put out around 180K BTU

Basically I'm going to be building something similar to this:

Looks fairly simple and staightforward to recreate.

Anyone has any knowledge of gas burners?

OMG, I just finished playing this map for the first time and I have to say out of all the in-game CTFs and custom CTFs I downloaded, I believe this is my favorite. Sous-vide cooking - a fucking culinary miracle

I started learning this technique of cooking meat/fish some time ago from Heston Blumenthal (Science of Cooking) and it's a culinary miracle.

It's quite simple to get started, get yourself a vacuum pack device, they can be had quite cheap.

Now let's say you'r cooking a chunk of meat, if you want this to be tender and medium rare you traditionally cook it so the inside is medium and have the outer meat get's overcooked and dry.

With sous-vide, you drop whatever spices and salt pepper on the meat, then vacuum seal it. For medium rare meat you want to cook it to a temp. of 56C. So all you do now is heat a large bowl of water to 56C, drop in the vacuum sealed meat and let it cook for around 4-12 hours depending on the width of the meat. seal in your temperature probe inside the meat to monitor the internal temp, once it's reached your meat is done. If there's a lot of collogen (The white chewy stuff) then the meat needs 12 hours, it doesn't matter, as long as you hold the correct temp. you can cook it for days and it will be ok and it can't dry out because it's vacuum sealed.

After it's done you have a piece of meat that's the same pinkish color from the outside in, perfection.

We have a problem now, no browned layer outside so less flavour due to lack of Maillard reaction (The flavours comming from browning)

So grab a kitchen gass tourch and brown that fucker up good, there's your delicious outer crust.

I can go and buy any piece of meat now, cheap shit that would be as tender as a shoe and it will be tender enough that it almost falls apart.

If you want to go one extra step, brine the meat first, say a large chunk of meat you need to soak it in a 5% salt solution with some vinegar overnight, chicken and pork less time, around 4+6 hours, due to osmotic pressure the meat will reach equilibrium with the salt solution and will be perfectly salted all the way and not just lots of salt on the outside like normal salting, and the osmotic reaction will have drawn water inside the meat so it will be extra extra extra juicy and tender.

Let's use wikipedia as an example:

Go to wikipedia, see the search button on the wikipedia side menu?

Right click in this textbox, on the popup menu you see now select "create search" and click OK.

That's it, now you can quickly search wikipedia from the Opera search bar.

Repeat for any other sites you use for research often.

Crows learn very quickly, most people knows this. Here's a guy that built a vending machine, conditioned the crows with peanuts and pennies so that they learn that putting a penny in the slot gets them a peanut. Then more conditioning and they figure out to look for dropped pennies all over so that they can get thier peanuts. Crows get food, guy gets money, neat little transaction.

Realy amazing, with this taken further, crows could be taught to clean up garbage of the street to get thier food for example.

Hey guys, what's up? I haven't been around in a while... been working and hanging out with my girlfriend. Working, fucking and smoking, basically. I've been smoking on this really good hash that I got from a friend. One hit and I'm pretty fucking stoned for a couple of hours. One little chunck of it has lasted me almost 2 months.

I was just thinking about the old acu days. I can't believe it's been 5 years or so since all of that. Fun times, fun times. My other clan that I had been playing UT2k4 with has pretty much died out in the past year. Only a couple of people are still actively playing UT at all, and we haven't done shit as a clan since UT3 has been out. I was hoping that game would re-vitalize the community, but it seems to have just helped kill it even more. I haven't even played the game much myself. I've been playing through Crysis and I just got Grand Theft Auto 4 for xbox last week and can't stop playing the damn thing. Those games are so awesome, and this one is the best yet.

Anyway, so what's going on with you?

Awesome Opera tip

Want to always save a certain filetype into a certain folder?

Go to preferences/advanced tab.

Click on "download"

Now you get a list of mime types.

Find the one you want to change by looking at the extension, make sure "hide file types opened with opera" is not checked. You can type in the extension in the "quick find" textbox to locate it.

Click on "edit" for the file type you located.

Now change the setting to:

Save to disk.
"Do not ask for bla bla, save directly to folder"

Now chose the folder and OK the changes.

From now on all you need to do is click on the file to download and it will be saved directly to your chosen location without doing anything else but clicking on the file.

If you don't see your preferred file type in the list, first click on a link to download that filetype, in the "save as" dialog that pops up put a checkmark in "always bla bla" and save the file. That will give you an entry in the download list that you can now change.

This is fucking awesome. For example I use newsbin to get nbz files that my automated newsdownloader will use to download shit, I hooked opera up now so it saves the nbz files across my network to my fileserver in the folder that my newsdownloader scans for nbz files, so now all I have to do is click on nbz files I want to doawnload and I don't have to do shit else.

Program that shows keyboard combinations?

I'm doing some screencast tutorials for advanced photoshop masking techniques and I spend hella time edting in all the shortcuts I use when I produce the screencast in Premiere (Adding small overlays using titles showing the shortcuts used)

Anyone know if there's some small program that pops up a window anytime you use a keyboard combination using modifiers? I've seen a few videos that displays shortcuts and it doesn't look like something they edited in because it misfires a couple times and who would edit that in on purpose?

Recording output from monitor?

Anyone know a way to simply record a stream directly from your videocard to video?

I'm gonna be creating some screencast tutorials and the current screencasting programs like Camtasia and Captivate are total shit, they record ok but the editing options are basically useless, audio editing almost non-existant so after recording I have to export to avi and then do my edits in Premiere which takes forever since it has to encode the video and THEN I can open it in Premiere so not only does it take more time, it also encodes 2 times degrading quality.

I'm a fish in water in Premiere, but there's no way do screenrecording straight from Premiere so I was thinking there was some program that could stream from the videocard and use that as a capture source in Premiere?

The new CEO of Virgin Media is putting his cards on the table early, branding net neutrality “a load of bollocks” and claiming he’s already doing deals to deliver some people’s content faster than others. If you aren’t prepared to cough up the extra cash, he says he’ll put you in the Internet “bus lane”.

What the fuck is wrong with people putting up with this? Here in Scandinavia ISPs are falling over themselves to offer faster and cheaper connections, no packet shaping, no bandwidth limitations, everything's flatrate. In the last couple years my ISP has DOUBLED my line speed without charging more, I started with 2mbit way back, then it was upped to 3, then 4 and around last year 8mbit and all that keepting the same price, hell it even got cheaper I think. Last month I downloaded (According to my newsreader) around 80 gigs, yes that's EIGHTY GIGABYTES and I have been doing around that pr. month the last 4 years at least, never heard a peep from my ISP, they just keep giving me more bandwidth, shit they even give us a free news server to leach from.

This is not only me, most of my friends do the same. Prices keep dropping, bandwidth keep increasing. What the fuck is wrong with the rest of the worlds ISPs that they constantly search for new ways to screw over thier own customers?

Anyone know how to get the language bar to remember the chosen language for a program?

My main language in Windows XP is set to Danish, if not then I don't get our vierd moon language characters. However when I'm using programs such as Photoshop CS3 and others that rely heavily on shortcuts I need to switch to English from the language bar in the taskbar or else halv the shortcuts that uses stuff like brackets won't work and I don't want to recreate them all, in Photoshop alone there's like a thousand.

Everytime I start a program or if I task switch from a program, XP RESETS my language back to Danish.

Does anyone know if there's a way to make XP remember what language I choose for each program so it sticks? It's driving me INSANE.

Warning for vctf server ops wanting to run custom maps

Almost forgot after I found this out, here it is in case some other poor sap want's to spice it up for thier player community...

If you run a vctf server, be VERY carefull adding custom maps. Some bug that nobody can seem to figure out causes players to not be able to connect to and play that map after they load the map once, it's completely ramdom. The map will download and then they will be kicked off the server with some error about a_vehicle_whateverthefuck couldn't be downloaded, packages that are part of the CORE game.

What's more fun is, that after this bug happens they can't load any OTHER maps from your server either.

Wanna know what's even MORE fun?

This continues to happen even after you remove the map from the maplist, you have to COMPLETELY delete the map from the server map folder, if UT3 tries to load the maps to see if they are to be active in the rotation it happens.

Wanna know what's even MORE fun?

After you figure this out and completely delete the map so players can connect again, it will persists until the players that downloaded the map empties thier cache folder, most people don't know shit of course so they won't be able to connect to your server until thier cache expires.

Nearly killed the vctf server, but since it's popular because everyone get killer pings and it runs smooth as fuck, everyone jumped right back in as soon as they could.

Only happens with vctf for some reason.

For chili heads, here's my chili chutney crack recipe

If there's any chili heads in here, this is a recipe I bumblingly stumpled upon creating while trying to recreate Chiracha, it's even better than Chiracha, my mouth is watering just thinking about it right now

Ken's Chili Crack Chutney
------------------------------------------------------------------------

This stuff is so delicious you will be addicted to it like crack. It's HOT, sweet and sour, and can be

used on almost anything you can imagine.

Ingredients:
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Garlic cloves, LOTS of garlic cloves.
4-5 searingly hot habaneros. Important, habaneros must be used. Red savina or scotch bonnets are good.
8-10 hot jalapenos, no wimp dick jalapenos that you can eat like bell peppers, must be HOT
Red vine vinegar.
Whole peppers mix. (White/black/red pepper corns)
Clove, about 5-8 whole cloves.
Juniper berries, about 5-8 whole berries.
Beauvais ketchup (Important, HAS to be Beauvais and NOT the sugar free shit)
1 tablespoon iodine free salt.

Get a picle jar that can hold about 1 liter.

Skin enough cloves of garlic that you can fill the jar about half up, yep that takes a hella time so put on some good music, it will be worth it, trust me.

After you get done with the garlic, dump the rest of the ingredients into the jar, minus the Ketchup.

Now fill the jar so it JUST covers the whole mess, not any higher, and put the jar somewhere in room temperature for a day or so.

If you did not use iodine free salt your garlic cloves will turn sickly green, it doens't matter that much as there's no taste difference, but it looks better.

Alright, one day or so has passed. Get your food processor out and dump everythin into it. Now pure everything to oblivion, you want it REALY smooth, and all the spices broken up.

Once your done pureing, dump everything back into the picle jar. Now squeze out enough Beauvais Ketchup to increase the volume about 15-20% and stirr it up real good.

You'r done, try it on anything, it sooooo damn good.

Warnings: This stuff is HOT, but it's the kind of hot that rips into you and then dissapates in a few minutes, that one of the things that makes this so addicting. This stuff REEKS something fierce.

You will smell if you eat this stuff, and if you leave plates out over night with a little bit of chutney on it your whole house will REEK of garlic.

Also remember to rinse your plates with water first if you have a dishwasher, I made the mistake the first time I made this to leave chutney on my plates and just chuck em' in the dishwasher, it STILL reeked of garlic after completing 4 loads.

Okay, I play on your server frequently, even though I have admin rights to all Epic servers. Reason: I love(d) your server with your previous setup. I have 2 griefs at the moment:

1. The change from 16 to 24 slot. Alot of the more competitive vCTF community loved your server for that sole reason. Anything over 16 slots get spammy and the amount of teamplay required to win falls drastically.

2. You put satellite on the server >.<. For me and I know alot others, it's a map that encourages spawnkilling, which is one of the worst problems vCTF on public face at the moment. I love custom maps, but Satellite imho is just not qualified as a decent map.

Maybe I can sneak in a similar map such as Citadel when the server has had more time to biuld up some regulars, there's a great port of it that plays very well, if that takes of maybe we can blow some life into CTF again.

You know what would be a SUPER idea for Epic? Release an updated version of the demo and put face in it as a ctf map, deck as the dm map, keep suspence for vctf and hell I don't know for warfare, pick the most popular one.

Is there anyway to create splits between the in and out points?

For example say I mark a a section with the in and out markers, now I want to create a split at the in and out markers so I can lift that part to later create a sequence using the parts I clipped out.

It's annoying to have to select "move to in point/out point" and then clip 2 times, so if there's a way to just split at markers that would be great but the manual is no help.

I know I can work in the source view and drop markers there and then drag the clip to the timeline, but I don't like to work in the source view at all, I just drop the movie to the timeline and chop it from there because that allows me to turn on all the frames so I can work visually instead of scrolling in the source view.

......all right, I give up! Who makes good ones? Apparently, not Linksys or Belkin according to newegg. I don't want to have to have both computers on to use one or the other. Yes, I want two computers to share one PS/2 keyboard, one PS/2 mouse, one VGA CRT monitor, and one 2.1 speaker system.

This could be a possibility as long as I have no trouble switching both PS/2 mice to USB on the one end and then switching them back to PS/2 on the other end.........and both computers don't have to be on for the switch to work.

I just got a reverse osmosis filter for the house water intake so I don't have to descale my espresso and coffee machines and don't have to constantly scrub down the walls of the batchrooms and such (We have extremely hard water here, like 400+ TDS, have to wipe everything down or there's scale spots all over the place) and it's the type you have to charge/recharge with salt, maybe some of you know some tips on useage?

Close opera, go to the directory where opera is installed and open up the file "search.ini"

Find the section for google, useually under [search engine 1] and replace the URL= line with this:

URL=http://www.google.com/search?q=-comparisons -comparison -price -compare -buy -shop -shopping %s&sourceid=opera&num=%i&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Save and do a google search from the opera search bar and it will now exclude all sites with common words in the results.

- Faust just released new version of UTCompIII, the mutator needs to be loaded in the server startup script(with the logins and stuff) to allow voting to work. Also there are no need to load any other mutator anymore because the UTC can now handle weaponstay,friendlyfire,spawnprotection etc.

I ran across part of a thread at BUF (quote by Anuban) and thought someone might be interested in what they had to say:

"While this is true it is also true that it is very very easy to set up "spectating" in UT3 for Instant Action. Many of you here know me and you know I don't play online and I used Spectator mode for testing tons of ONS and VCTF maps back in UT2K4. So yeah I was bothered at first as well and then someone told me about the "viewbot" command and bam it was all so clear. I just set up a the F6 key to use as my spectate bot/switch to a different bot key and I was all set.

So just into your Input.ini file and add that line and then when the game starts just press F6 and you will be in spectate mode and then further pressing F6 will switch to the next bot. You can feign death to prevent from being killed but it doesn't matter ... all that happens when your character gets killed is the camera shifts a bit and you just shift it back with your mouse and keep on spectating. It is such a good workaround that I think Epic feels that issue is really not as important as fixing other parts of the game. I have to say on this one I am 100% agreement. This method may not be perfect but it is really good and definitely gets the job done."

1. In the UTEngine.ini file, there are 3 settings I'm not sure about under [SystemSettings]. At FragOnSight, they suggest changing these to strip the high quality settings for struggling systems.
SkeletalMeshLODBias=0 (mine is set to 1 right now)
ParticleLODBias=0 (mine is bizarrely set to 2147483647 now for some odd reason)
ScreenPercentage=100.000000 (mine is set to 50.000000 now and I still am not sure what this setting means)

I guess just this one numbered question for now.

I had to exchange my La Pavoni to this beast today...

Beutifull isn't she? It's a la Vibiemme Domobar Super, weighs 75 pounds, nearly broke my back hauling it around to the car.

Got a kick ass offer on her so I had to jump on it, oh well porridge and noodles for the next 6 months.

Still tuning her, setting the correct pressure and temps and learning how she want's it, comming from a manual lever machine like the La Pavoni it's quite a change to a HX machine with E61 grouphead.

I did try to steam milk with it, the steam pressure on this thing is fucking crazy, I thought it was going to be a bitch steaming and frothing milk but you basically just stick the steam wand into the milk and let it rip and it's spinning the milk so fast it blends to perfect microfoam, almost takes the fun out of it, with the panovi and other machines it's like a fucking wizards ritual to froth milk.

Aww they removed the links, fuckers and they set the forums so google doesn't cache them so I couldn't grab the links.

Gameplay:

- Increased UTGame MaxPlayersAllowed to 64.

- Fixed leviathan turret instant refire exploit.

- Fixed errant lock on warnings when no longer in vehicle.

- Fixed first person weapons in demo playback.

- Improved AI code for adjusting around obstacles. If adjust left and right fail, try moving to center of reachspec.

- If previous move failed, don't allow "advanced tactics" (serpentine, etc.) for next move.

- Added FailedMoveTarget and MoveFailureCount to controller to track movement failures.

- Added bForceNoDetours to UTBot. Don't allow detours when bot is approaching a neutral node (more important to touch node first).

- Fixed bots thinking they've reach the orb spawner without quite getting there and touching the orb.

- Fixed cases where bots could get stuck failing to translocate over and over - bots know to give up now.

- Adjusted bot reaction time to seeing new enemies.

- Improved bot AI for dealing with lifts and hoverboards.

- Bots taunt after winning a match.

- Bots now can be fooled by feign death.

- Sandstorm has more impact on bots being able to acquire/aim at enemies.

- Fixed bots attacking friendly player in rare cases when that player recently stole an enemy vehicle.

- Fixed bots not handling the "Hold This Position" order correctly when the player giving the order is in a multi-person vehicle.

Demo playback:

- Fixed demo playback not ending/looping correctly when the demo ends due to the DemoRecSpectator being destroyed before the end of the file is reached.

- Demos can now be paused.

- By default, demo playback now runs at full speed and interpolates in between demo frames using the normal client simulation code. The old frame-locked method is still available by passing ?disallowinterp. Timedemos are unaffected by this change.

- Fixed demoplay URL parsing counting the options as part of the filename unless an extension was specified in the demo name

- Added a "Delete Demo" button to the demo playback menu.

- Demo playback now properly handles rotation when viewing a Pawn in first person.

- Fixed looking around while spectating a vehicle.

Server Browser:

- Implemented "Server History" tab page in server browser, with ability to "lock" favorites on that page.

User Interface:

- Can now save settings/progress even if have never created a profile.

- Removed annoying confirmation menu when starting a game.

- Removed unnecessary top settings page (can use tabs at the top of the settings to navigate).

- Added a Messages tab to the mid game menu.

- Friends messages now saved until explicitly deleted.

- - Added the ability to specify custom simple crosshair coordinates for weapons, with new config properties bUseCustomCoordinates and CustomCrosshairCoordinates.
To change the crosshair used for all weapons, add the following lines to the [utweapon] section of the UTWeapon.ini file:

CustomCrosshairCoordinates=(U=276,V=84,UL=22,VL=25 )

where the CustomCrosshairCoordinates have U and V as the offsets into the crosshair texture (UI_HUD.HUD.UTCrosshairs), and UL and VL specify the size of the texture area to use.
To use a different crosshair for a specific weapon, simply add those two lines to the appropriate weapon specific section in UTWeapon.ini.

Networking:

- Implemented STUN support (Simple Traversal of UDP Through Network Address Translators) to enable clients and servers to connect from behind a NAT.

- Fixed team scores very rarely not updating for a client.

- Fixed bot faction option when running a listen server.

- Fixed link setup not reset correctly when going from a map with a custom link setup to one using the default.

- Fixed a case where Duel would place an incoming player on the wrong team when some players were still travelling.

- Bullseye stats are now properly recorded.

- Fixed clients not travelling to downloaded maps correctly.

- Fixed the client and server getting into a loop sending each other close messages in some situations.

- Quick match incorporates player rating into search decision.

- Fixed issue where Vista clients would not receive all servers from a server browser search.

- Applied proper fix to suppressing voice on dedicated servers.

- Fixed issues with players not getting on right team in Duel and Duel+Survival if a player leaves in certain timing windows during map transitions.

- Fixed previous level PRIs showing up on the scoreboard/leaderboard after the client travels (making it look like players have already scored lots of points when those clients are in fact still loading)

- Fixed losing your custom character mesh after changing teams during a match.

- Fixed HTTP redirection for mod autodownloading

- Fixed autodownloaded mods not being loaded correctly in some cases

- Fixed orb rebuilding not being played correctly on clients if the orb was destroyed by an enemy player

- Implemented DUEL match stat reporting for gamespy ladder

- Fixed "open" console command not working when an Internet server address is specified

- Added "BecomeActive" exec to switch from spectator to player

Server Administration:

- Reduced tick rate for dedicated servers with no clients (saves CPU on idle servers).

- Dedicated servers do not require CD keys.

- Added -configsubdir= command line option to cause .ini files to be loaded/saved from the specified subdirectory of Game\Config\

- Added QueryPort configuration and command line option.

- Added an "AdminChangeOption [option] [value]" console command for server admins. This allows changing most simple .ini values (e.g. GoalScore) from the client. This command will not override URL options. The change will take effect after the next map change.

- Added an "AdminPublishMapList" console command for server admins. This overrides the server's map list for the current game type with the one on the client that used the command.

- Uses GameReplicationInfo.ServerName if set for the name of the server on the server browser.

- Added "AdminForceVoiceMute" and "AdminForceVoiceUnMute": Stops/Starts a player from sending voip to others

- Added "AdminForceTextMut" and "AdminForceTextUnMute": Stops/Starts a player from send text messages to others

- Updated AdminPlayerList to show the PlayerID of the players on the server.

- Updated Kick/Ban to allow for using either the player name or the id

- Fixed servers advertising as the wrong gametype if the gametype is changed without restarting the server

- Added new IdleServerTickRate property to IpDrv.TcpNetDriver. If not set, IdleServerTickRate defaults to MaxTickRate. Can be set to lower values to reduce server CPU utilization when 0 players. Reported ping will increase if set lower.

Map Specific

- Fixed WAR-Avalanche terrain LOD popping issue on high end PCs.

- Fixed bots rarely getting stuck in mid air in DM-Gateway in the city section.

- Fixed some VCTF-Suspense pathing issues.

- Fixed issues with circular lift on DM-Deimos.

- Fixed translucent mesh sorting issues in DM-Gateway.

- Fixed various map collision bugs

- Improved bot AI with Leviathan in Torlan

Campaign/Co-op:

- Fixed a bug that could cause too many bots to be added to co-op matches in some cases.

- Added support for seamless travel interrupting a travel to start another travel. This fixes single player breaking if the host selects the next mission before the clients have finished travelling to the mission selection level

- Fixed extra copy of a character when a human player leaves a co-op game at the right time.

- Changed network loss during single player to result in player signed in locally.

Modding:

- Added a SupportedGameTypes field to UTUIDataProvider_Mutator. If some entries are in this array, the mutator will only be visible in the menus if the selected gametype is found in the array.

- Fixed custom gametype midgame menus not being used correctly.

- Shipping script compiler now allows localized/config defaultproperties because otherwise autodownloaded mods have no way for their localized/config variables to work.

- Added Get/SetSpecialValue() stubs to Object to allow mods to expose values that can be modified without creating a dependancy.

- Added support for custom gametypes showing up on their own in the server browser. The game class needs to implement UpdateGameSettings() and call GameSettings.SetStringSettingValue() to set CONTEXT_GAME_MODE to CONTEXT_GAME_MODE_CUSTOM. Then, in the gametype's menu .ini data, set GameSearchClass to "UTGameSearchCustom".

- Fixed cooking a map sometimes deleting all other mod files in the Published directory

- Fixed bPostRenderIfNotVisible flag

some UT2004 settings

As I started to tweak UT3 based on the suggestions in this forum, I realized I wanted to make sure UT2004 and UT had all the updated tweaks to make them run slightly better as well. I'm mostly concerned with mouse and crosshair settings to make my aim better, but some other ones creap in as well and some that are absent from my game files that some online tweak guides talk about will be mentioned also. I will mention what the setting is or ask questions or give what I think might be the answer if I have an idea. Let me know what you guys think. Let's start with UT2004 in this thread (I'll start another one for UT)!

IN-GAME MENU

DISPLAY
- why does brightness show about 80% full, contrast show about 70% full and gamma show about 20% full, but gamma in UT2004.ini show 80% (or 0.800000)?

AUDIO AND PLAYER SECTIONS SEEM FINE FOR NOW

GAME
- I have auto aim off already, so this should be fine.

INPUT
- let's not worry how I configured my controls for this one as it could get lengthy.
- mouse smoothing is on (I'm guessing this needs to be off)
- reduce mouse lag is on (I'm guessing this should be off)
- mouse sensitivity (game) - 3.00 (I'm guessing this should be 2 or same as menus)
- mouse sensitivity (menus) - 1.25
- mouse smoothing strength - 0.30 (I'm guessing this should be 0.00)
- mouse acceleration threshold - 0.00

WEAPONS
- custom weapon crosshairs is on (I'm guessing this needs to be off)
- crosshair set to cross(1) (I believe this needs to be on dot)
- red, green, blue and opacity are all set to 100% (this needs to be set like the UT3 suggestions to pink)

OTHER SECTIONS ARE FINE FOR NOW

UT2004.INI FILE

- same gamma setting problem linked to above question
- CaptureMouse=True (maybe this just gets your mouse settings, but not sure but I think it's fine)
- MouseXMultiplier=1.000000, MouseYMultiplier=1.000000 (I think these are OK)
- ReduceMouseLag=True (see above)

USER.INI FILE

- I believe these last 4 crosshair settings will have to change similar to the in-game menu settings above.

[Engine.PlayerInput]
MouseSamplingTime=+0.008333 (this command doesn't even show up in my section; in fact, the section is completely missing as well)

[UnrealGame.UnrealPawn]
bPlayOwnFootSteps=True (this might be cool for a couple matches, but I bet it gets irritating quickly; this command is not even listed in the section anyway).

Other questions:
- do we need to worry about custom coordinates for crosshairs in UT2004 as in UT3?
- is there a translocator toggle problem like UT3?
- do we need to worry about bCenteredWeaponFire in UT2004 like UT3?

That should do it for UT2004! Let me know what you guys think.

I finally got tired of roasting my coffee using a wok and a heatgun or messing with popcorn poppers so I got myself a commercial grade home roaster, the Gene Cafe.

Been wanting one for ages but it's fucking expensive but I finally caved since when I roast with a heatgun I have to do it outside in a toolshed in the garden because of the smoke, and it's freakin cold right now.

CTF Times you normally play

Hey there..this game is sick. The details are simply amazing (I still love being a shock whore) Still a little buggy. Learned the hard way when you have the auto login feature checked off and the logon server is down. This little shuttle can put up some huge FPS in full detail. What time do you all play normally? There does not seem to be nearly as many UT3 players as the old games were - hopefully it picks up.

DM goal score?

OK, I'm trying to change the default DM goal score to 15 so that any map I try offline the menu automatically comes up with a goal score of 15. Why isn't it working? I have this section now in both UTGame/Config/DefaultGame.ini and UTGame/Config/UTGame.ini now and it's not working:

When it's done everyone can order 100/100 Mbit fiber, I'm already signed up and have been waiting forever and now it's finnally very close to happning.

......it figures the night I decide to finally run the game and the UT3 login server is down.

In about 30 mins there's going to be a 4 hour power out in DK as they are doing some work on oceanic powerlines or some shit, fucking 4 hours staring into darkness is going to be loads of fun

Already got books, candles, battery lights out and ready for the long haul, funny how reliant we are on having power eh? All I can think of doing is read some books, everything else I'm remotely interested in requires power and my laptop is redicously overpowered so batteries last like 20 min. on full charge.

Don't know if the servers are going down, they have UPS for 5 days but the power is out in all DK so that may kill the power to some larger connection point somewhere.
