What do you think about the sound seperation and audio clues in UT3?

I been trying to work on my prediction, like only killing via prediction shots and listening to sound clues to know where to throw prediction shots, but I'm finding it VERY hard to hear if something is behind me to the left/right.

For example just try an offline game with one bot, stand somewhere and listen.. can you figure out when he's comming up behind you and how far he's away?

It's like the left and right speakers are just panned almost into the middle so you have no idea of left and right, maybe it's my sound card? I don't think so though, because I make music on this system to and there's no problem with stereo image then.

Right now I can only realy figure out where someone is because I know the map and where pickups and weapons/weapon packs are so I know where someone is after I know the map well, but I can't tell 100% just be hearing footsteps and where sound is comming from.

This was a problem in UT2003/4 to, not as much as in ut3, but in ut99 I could hear exactly where things was.

To get an idea of whats possible with just stereo, listen to this youtube video with headphones, MUST use headphones to hear it properly. That's how the ingame sound should work, it was like this in ut99
